A few things you can do at home to get more out of your air conditioner, run it more cheaply, and make it last longer. Distilled from more than a decade of Kevin’s field notes — see the blog for the originals.
Energy Saving
- Shut windows and external doors when the aircon is running.
- Shut doors to unused rooms — minimise the area you’re cooling.
- Clean the air filters regularly — every 1 to 2 months.
- Set the thermostat between 24 and 26 °C in summer, 18 to 21 °C in winter. The room will feel cooler than the number suggests once humidity drops.
- Locate the outdoor unit on the shady side of the house — or shade it. Keep plants and clutter clear so air flows freely around it.
- Reduce heat entering your home in the first place — shade windows and walls, and insulate the ceiling. The aircon does less work.
General Maintenance
- New air conditioners should be cleaned after 12 months to prevent dust and mould stains on the visible parts.
- After that, a proper clean every 1 to 2 years — sooner if you run it hard or live near the coast.
- Book in winter (June–October). Systems are off, and you’re not competing with the summer rush.
- If you can’t reach the filter safely — arthritis, a bad back, no step ladder — call Kevin. It’s part of the job.
Signs Your Aircon Needs a Clean
- It takes longer than it used to before the room feels cool.
- Power bills have crept up with no change in how you use it.
- There’s a musty or damp smell when it starts up.
- Water is dripping or leaking down the wall from the unit.
- Visible dust or discolouration on the vents and cover.
- Someone in the house has started sneezing, wheezing or coughing more than usual.
